You’ve heard about injectables, but the different types can be confusing. What’s the difference between Botox and Restylane? What’s Dysport? Is there a distinction between Radiesse and Sculptra?

This page will help you weed through the confusion so that you will be able to make an informed decision about injectables.

Did you know, for example, that there are different types of lines and wrinkles? One thing is true of all injectables: They are non-surgical treatments that require no down time. But let’s review the two main types.

Relaxing Agents/Neurotoxins

Some lines and wrinkles are caused by muscle activity. Those annoying frown lines that form between your eyebrows are an example of this type of wrinkle. As you squint repeatedly from the sun, the muscles involved in the squint weaken and stay somewhat contracted in the squint. The skin over those muscles then becomes “stuck” in a wrinkled position.

The remedy is a “relaxing agent” that does exactly what it sounds like. It helps the muscle return to a relaxed position so that the skin relaxes, too, smoothing out the wrinkles. These relaxing agents include Botox and Dysport.

These products are also called “neurotoxins,” which might sound scary, but all that label means is that they stop the muscle activity that you don’t want. Botox has been used for years, for example, to treat muscle spasms – even in children – so these injectables are very safe.

Botox and Dysport are excellent for smoothing Crow’s feet, bunny lines, forehead wrinkles, and lines around the eyes. Despite what you might have heard, they do not inhibit your facial expressions.

Botox, of course, is the most well-known of these injectables. Dysport works in a similar way, but each has its own subtle differences. Our physicians and certified injectors at H/K/B will recommend which product is best for you. In all cases, the results last about 4 months.

Dermal Fillers

Unlike relaxing agents, dermal fillers actually do “fill” areas of the face and neck that have become less full, hollowed, or sunken. Young faces have a full, plump look. As we age, the body produces less collagen, causing our skin to become thinner, become looser, and begin to sag. Wrinkles form, and we look a bit more gaunt without that youthful volume we had in the past. These are the issues that dermal fillers correct.

There are a number of different types of dermal fillers. At H/K/B, we offer most of them, including:

Each one works in a slightly different way, allowing us to choose the best possible filler to give you the look you want. Sometimes, a combination of two or more fillers will provide you with the most beautiful outcome. Visit our Dermal Fillers page for more information.
