Fat Grafting & Injections
Fat grafting & injections fulfill a dream that people have had for years: Transfer fat from one area to another. One of the advantages of this technique is that it uses your own body’s tissue, so there is no chance of foreign body rejection.
At H/K/B, we use a new technique for fat grafting that causes less disruption to the harvested fat cells. What does this mean for you? More of the fat that is injected will “take,” which means that less of the fat will be absorbed by the body. When fat is absorbed, it sometimes causes the need for a second injection procedure. Our technique also allows us to perform fat grafting faster than in the past with less downtime for you.
Fat injections in the face can offer similar results as dermal fillers, improving facial contours and helping you to look younger. Only after a consultation and examination, however, can our surgeons determine if fat grafting and injections will provide you with the results you want. A dermal filler may be preferable to treat some signs of aging on the face and neck.
The harvesting of the fat is done through liposuction of your “problem areas.” The fat is treated and then re-injected into the face where additional volume is needed. Our surgeons are experts at both liposuction and contouring of the face using fat grafting and injections, providing many H/K/B patients with excellent results.
You have two options for fat grafting & injections: For those who wish to reduce the body’s problem areas, enough fat can be removed to both contour the lower body and add volume to the face or other parts of the body (such as the buttocks or breasts). If you wish to add facial volume using fat grafting but do not feel the need to reduce the lower body, we will harvest only the amount of fat needed for your injections.
What can fat grafting & injections do for me?
Fat injections are most often used to plump thin lips, lift sagging cheeks, improve tear troughs (hollows under the eyes), or add volume to other parts of the face that have lines and wrinkles.
Fat injections can also be used to contour areas of the body, such as the buttocks or breasts.
What can I expect during fat grafting & injections?
Fat grafting and injections can be performed on an outpatient basis using general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation at our fully accredited surgical facility on our beautiful campus, where our highly qualified nurses will pamper you. Our nurses are certified in advanced cardiac life support, which ensures the highest level of supervision, evaluation, and care in the unlikely event of an emergency. We also work with board-certified anesthesiologists.
In the liposuction portion of the process, an incision is made on the part of the body where the fat will be removed, and a tube called a cannula is inserted. A vacuum-like device is attached to the cannula, and suction removes the appropriate amount of fat.
The fat is then spun in a centrifuge to remove oils and any other non-fat materials. The resulting fat is very smooth in texture so that it will look perfectly natural when re-injected into the desired area of the face using a fine needle. For the injection portion, a topical anesthetic can be used.
How long does it take to recover from fat grafting & injections?
A compression garment may be provided for the area where the fat was harvested. You can expect bruising, swelling, and soreness there, which can be managed with pain medication and ice packs. Recovery takes one to two weeks, and strenuous activities should be avoided for about four weeks.
Any bruising or swelling at the injection sites on the face should resolve within a few days.
Of course, we will monitor your progress in follow-up examinations and will always be available to answer any questions you have while you heal.
How long do fat grafting & injections last?
Fat grafting and injections are long lasting in most cases.
