If you work out and eat right but still find that you have pockets of fat on your body, you’re not alone. It’s just a harsh reality that some fatty tissue refuses to respond to diet and exercise. This is why liposuction is one of the most popular cosmetic plastic surgery procedures at H/K/B.
Of course, this popularity is also because Dr. Hunstad developed the “Hunstad System,” the most widely utilized tumescent anesthesia system in the world, which is an advanced technique used for “tumescent liposuction.” Dr. Kortesis & Dr. Bharti have been trained in this technique by the inventor, so you can count on receiving the safest, most state-of-the-art liposuction procedure from any of our extensively experienced and credentialed surgeons.
What can liposuction do for me?
While liposuction is not a weight loss procedure or a cure for obesity, it can result in a fairly substantial amount of weight loss. The result is a slimmer, smoother contour on your body without that stubborn fat. Our patients have shared with us that they have reduced by four to eight sizes or even more!
Areas that are commonly treated include the neck, chest area in men, arms, abdomen/tummy, love handles, back, buttocks, thighs, knees, and calves. Tumescent liposuction of the entire abdomen and back – a circumferential liposuction of the trunk – can offer a fantastic improvement of the shape and contour of your body.
What can I expect during liposuction?
There are many different liposuction techniques, which vary based on the instruments used to remove the fat. Inconspicuous areas are chosen for a small incision – less than one quarter of an inch – and anesthetic fluid containing large volumes of diluted lidocaine and adrenaline are injected using the revolutionary tumescent technique. This fluid also minimizes bleeding.
A hollow tube called a “cannula” is inserted into the incision, and a mechanical, motorized device known as power-assisted liposuction is used to move the cannula back and forth, allowing the surgeon a great degree of precision and control.
In denser areas, ultrasonic-assisted liposuction may be used. In this case, a solid titanium cannula is inserted into the incisions and used to emulsify the fat using ultrasonic energy. The liquefied fat is then removed using power-assisted liposuction techniques.
If very small areas are being treated, a syringe liposuction technique might be used. In this minimally invasive technique, the surgeon inserts a syringe with a tube, and when the syringe is withdrawn, a suction is created that causes the fat cells to be withdrawn at the same time. Healing from this technique is generally fast, and blood loss is minimal.
How long does it take to recover from liposuction?
Your recovery period will depend on the extent of your liposuction procedure, but most patients can return to most normal activities within two weeks. In some cases, drains are used to collect fluid for the first week after your surgery. The drains may be annoying, but they speed the resolution of swelling.
You can expect some bruising, inflammation, and soreness after liposuction, but you can take pain medication to ease any discomfort you feel. You will also have follow-up appointments with your surgeon to ensure that you are healing properly.

The results of liposuction are long lasting.
